Raleigh Mead Care Home
This project comprises a carefully considered extension to an existing 62-bed care home, delivering two new self-contained specialist dementia care wings in response to increasing local demand for specialist care accommodation. The proposals create 18 additional bedrooms alongside new communal lounges, staff facilities and dedicated amenity spaces designed to support resident wellbeing and long-term care provision.

Working within the constraints of the existing building geometry and the close proximity of neighbouring residential properties, the design adopts a simple linear form that carefully balances operational efficiency, privacy and environmental quality. Primary resident spaces are orientated southwards to maximise daylight and outward views, whilst circulation and secondary spaces are positioned to the north to carefully manage overlooking and minimise impact on adjacent homes.

A key feature of the scheme is the introduction of new south-facing upper-level communal terraces, providing accessible external amenity space where none previously existed. The massing of the extension has been carefully stepped down towards the northern boundary to reduce visual impact and maintain a sensitive relationship with neighbouring properties.
The project reflects a design-led approach to specialist care environments, creating calm, light-filled spaces that support dignity, comfort and social interaction, whilst responding sensitively to a constrained residential setting.
